MAJOR GENERAL JOHN W. BRENNAN

Commander, Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve

Major General John W. Brennan Jr. is the Commanding General, Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve. He was commissioned in 1990 as a second lieutenant in the signal corps and initially served as a platoon leader and company executive officer with 7th Infantry Division (Light) in Fort Ord, California, and 1st Cavalry Division in Fort Hood, Texas.

 In 1995, Brennan completed the Special Forces Qualification Course and was assigned to the 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) where he commanded two Operational Detachment Alphas (ODA) and served as the 1st Battalion Assistant Operations Officer. After his time with 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), he remained in the special operations community with assignments within the U.S. Army Special Operations Command and the Joint Special Operations Command. His assignments include serving as the executive officer for the commander of U.S. Army Special Operations Command, deputy commander of the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force – Afghanistan, chief of staff and deputy commander of Special Operations Command – Central, deputy commanding general – Operations of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), and deputy commanding general of the Joint Special Operations Command.

Brennan commanded the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force – Syria, and the Train, Advise, Assist – Command East, and most recently 1st Special Forces Command (Airborne), Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Brennan has deployed and commanded units in combat at every echelon between detachment and task force-level in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM, IRAQI FREEDOM, INHERENT RESOLVE, and FREEDOM’S SENTINEL. His awards and decorations include: the Defense Superior Service Medal (1 Oak Leaf Cluster), the Legion of Merit (1 OLC), the Bronze Star Medal with Valor device (1 OLC), the Bronze Star Medal (5 OLC), the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (2 OLC), the Meritorious Service Medal (1 OLC), the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, Special Forces Tab, Ranger Tab, Master Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Military Free Fall Parachutist Badge, and Special Operations Diver Badge.

He is a graduate of North Carolina State University, the Air Command and Staff College, and the U.S. Army War College Fellows Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
