SDF Capture Eight ISIS Fighters During Large-Scale Clearance

By CJTF-OIR Public Affairs

SOUTHWEST ASIA – The SDF (Syrian Democratic Forces) captured eight known ISIS fighters and affiliates, along with weapons and ammunition, during a large-scale clearance operation in Deir ez-Zor province, Syria, Jan. 31.

The operation aimed to isolate an ISIS sleeper cell, capture its members and reduce terrorist attacks across the region.
“Our partners continue to conduct intelligence-driven operations, removing ISIS fighters from the region and denying them safe haven,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Eric T. Hill, Special Operations Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve commander. “Our enduring partnership is keeping pressure on ISIS networks in order to maintain peace and stability for over 3 million people living in northeast Syria.”

Coalition Forces accompanied hundreds of SDF commandos who raided several compounds. The Coalition and SDF have conducted an increasing number of partnered operations in northeast Syria—multiple raids each week to prevent ISIS resurgence in Deir ez-Zor and Hasakah provinces.

“The defeat ISIS mission in Syria has proceeded uninterrupted in recent weeks,” said Hill. “Coalition Forces and the SDF continue to cooperate in our mutual efforts to eliminate extremist networks from northeast Syria.”

The SDF is holding the detainees in their facilities. The operation also captured ISIS documents, weapons and military equipment.
