BAGHDAD, Iraq –
Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR) conducted a change of command ceremony in Baghdad, Iraq, August 5, 2024, marking a transition of leadership. U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Kevin C. Leahy assumed command from U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Joel JB Vowell.
“Maj. Gen. Vowell led CJTF-OIR with distinction, demonstrating exceptional dedication and leadership during his tenure,” Gen. Michael “Erik” Kurilla, commander, U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM), said about the outgoing commander. “Under his command, the task force achieved significant milestones in the fight against ISIS, contributing to the stability and security of the region. His efforts strengthened partnerships and fostered cooperation with local forces and international allies.”
Maj. Gen. Kevin Leahy brings a wealth of knowledge to the role, having previously served as the commander of Special Operations Command - Central (SOCCENT). With a distinguished career in the U.S. Army, he is well-equipped to continue the mission and build upon the successes achieved under Maj. Gen. Vowell's command.
Maj. Gen. Vowell remarked upon the dedication of service members from the entire coalition. “We owe a debt of gratitude to the men and women of our United States military and the 24 other troop-contributing nations who have sacrificed in support of this critical mission. Each service member should be proud of their contributions, knowing that their work continues to protect our homelands from a malign group still aspiring to carry out spectacular attacks,” Vowell said.
Vowell spoke of some of the many positive impacts that service members made. “Your dedication has given children the chance to live normal lives after being repatriated home following the devastation of the past. You have also helped build the security capabilities of our partner forces, contributing to a safer and more stable region,” Vowell emphasized. “Our Joint and Combined Coalition remains strong, and I am honored to have had the privilege to lead you all.”
Comprised of 25 nations, CJTF-OIR works collaboratively to achieve the enduring defeat of Da’esh through advising, assisting, and enabling its partner forces to protect their homelands and degrade the malign terrorist organization.
Maj. Gen. Leahy expressed his commitment to the mission, saying, "It is an honor to assume command and continue the important work of supporting peace and stability in Iraq and Syria. I am grateful for the opportunity to lead such a dedicated team and look forward to building on the strong foundation established by Maj. Gen. Vowell."
